The Warmth of the Maker's Hand
There is something special about pottery that feels unmistakably made by human hands. This chrysanthemum-shaped plate is one of those pieces. Its gentle indentations, softly irregular contours, and satisfying thickness give it a warmth and character that mass production cannot replicate. These are the very details that drew us to this plate.
Beautiful at the table or as a tray for jewelry, keys, and other everyday essentials, this plate brings a special touch to the spaces around you. Its sculptural form is just as enjoyable to display on its own as it is to use.
The plate comes from Kohaku Kiln in Nara, Japan, where the Rakusai Onishi name has been passed down through eight generations. The family has a longstanding history of creating ceremonial pottery for Kasuga Taisha, one of Nara's most revered Shinto shrines.
Today, the eighth-generation Rakusai continues this tradition, creating both exceptional works of ceramic art and pieces intended for everyday use. This chrysanthemum plate brings that remarkable craftsmanship into your daily life, to be appreciated not only for its beauty, but for the pleasure of using it.
The Individual Character of Handmade Pottery
Each plate has its own character, with natural variations in color, shape, and finish that develop through the making and firing process. Tiny dark specks may naturally appear in the clay, reflecting the characteristics of traditional Akahada pottery. The unglazed underside may also reveal natural firing marks and variations in the color of the clay.
These variations are part of the character of traditional handmade pottery. Please note that the plate you receive may vary slightly from the one shown in the photographs.
