Care & Maintenance

Urushi Safety
Genuine urushi may cause skin irritation or an allergic rash upon direct contact with the skin. Always wear protective gloves when handling urushi and avoid direct skin contact. If skin irritation occurs, please consult a physician. Please read the included instructions carefully before use.

How to Use
A detailed booklet and step-by-step video guides are included to help you through the repair process. The videos cover repairs for breaks, chips, and cracks, along with brush and tool cleaning, storing leftover urushi, and preparing a simple urushi curing box.

Please read the included instructions and watch the appropriate video before beginning your repair.

Care After Repair
Handle repaired pieces with care. Hand wash gently with a soft sponge and mild dish soap. Do not use in a microwave, oven, dishwasher, or dish dryer, and avoid direct heat, prolonged soaking, and refrigerator or freezer storage.

Repaired areas are not as strong as the original piece. Avoid applying pressure to the repaired area or lifting the piece by a repaired handle or other load-bearing section.

For greater strength and longevity, allow the repaired piece to rest for approximately one month after completion before use.

Urushi Storage
Store urushi in a cool, dark place away from high temperatures. For best results, use within approximately one year.

Give a favorite piece a new life with your own hands.

A chipped bowl, a cracked plate, or a broken cup doesn't have to be the end. Rather than hiding its history, kintsugi lets the repaired lines become part of the piece, preserving the traces of its past while giving it a new character of its own.

SHINGETSU makes kintsugi approachable for beginners by using modern adhesives and epoxy putty to simplify the repair process. Yet it stays true to one of the essential materials of traditional kintsugi, using genuine urushi lacquer rather than synthetic lacquer in the finishing process. This thoughtful combination makes it easier to begin while still giving you the experience of working with real urushi.

Choose brass powder for a warm, gold-toned finish or tin powder for a subtle, silver-toned finish, adding a new expression to the piece you repair.
